HIV/AIDS Education and Social Support
WOPA ‘s primary target for our fight against poverty and Aids is among women and children because a survey released in october 2004 by cameroon health’s Ministry indicates that women showed an HIV infection rate 6,7 percent , whereas men were at 4,1 percent.
Wopa organized regular educational talks on STD , HIV/AIDS for youth and women groups in its areas of action Kribi, Limbe and rural areas using songs, dramas and videos.
Many orphans and vulnerable children have been sponsored by Wopa to pursuit their education.
Training Workshops
Numerous workshops have been organized on many subjects like:
Tie and Dye of textile – Production of handicraft articles
Basic knowledge of accountancy
Small business management
On the occasion of the international women day 2009, we organised from 2nd to 7th day of March a free computer training seminar for women and how to do research in internet.
Trafficking in women
In 2007 we realized a pilot project titled:”Trafficking in young girls in Cameroon: prevention, return and reintegration” financed by HUMANITAS and OXFAM NOVIB Netherlands.
The project has been prepared when Wopa took part in a working mission organized by Humanitas and Oxfam Novib Netherlands on trafficking in women on December 2006.
A network has been created in the occasion between BLINN Netherlands, three Cameroonian organizations AWA, ASSEJA, WOPA and some Nigerian organizations.
Many conferences have been organized in Cameroon by the network in Limbe south west province and at the United center for Human rights in Yaounde.
WOPA continues working with BLINN by helping for the social reintegration of girls victim of trafficking once back in home country.
Protecting children and their rights
In the past years Wopa has sponsored many orphans and vulnerable children in school and in workshops .Many seminar have been organized to address issues surrounding child trafficking, the impact of HIV/AIDS on youth, the advantages and disadvantages of the internet.
Since November 2008, we are working with Mingo’o community, an ethnic minority pygmies Bagyeli living in the rural forest of south.
The isolated and impoverished village does not have any basic structure - no school, no health center. The only school is located 10 km in the next village.
To fight against illiteracy, we have built a straw hut used as a classroom and started a school prepatory centre. The number of children is increasing; 28 at the beginning of the program with 51 pupils today.
This centre will prepare pupils for their entrance into the formal school system and enhances their prospects for primary school enrollment.
These children need your help !! !!
We are looking for sponsors to continue give hope to these children, having their rights to access to basic education.
NEEDS: benches, tables, cloches, school supplies, books... and why not a safe building.
